Day One: First Meal/First Demolition

So... it's kind of depressing to sign paperwork for three hours, walk into your home-to-be, and realize that the work is only beginning because the place is so incredibly gross and needs so many small things done that it is not even remotely a small feat to complete them all. It almost makes me want to cry. Almost. I'm clinging to the hope that the potential in this place will pay off without bankrupting us because that would defeat the purpose of our seeking a reasonably priced home to begin with.

We shared our first meal with Ben and Denise tonight, who brought us dinner. The kitchen floor has not yet been cleaned and we did not at the time have running water (more on that later), but it was an adventure that included my having to go to someone else's house to use the bathroom and to get water. Entertaining for some, I'm sure. But we ate and it was delicious.

And then the boys tackled this (below): The downstairs bathroom shower. When beginning to run the hot water heater (so I could steam clean carpets - didn't get to that today at all), we discovered that something was leaking and the source of it was behind the shower wall. It turns out that the pipes froze and burst at some point during the year the property was vacant, resulting in a really nasty leak that required some extra caution and will require a bit of funding to fix. Not to worry, however, as we intended to start over with the downstairs bathroom anyway (eventually). We might just close it off once everything works and re-assess at another time when we have more money. Thankfully, Ben helped Christopher get the plumbing back in use and we'll hopefully have hot water tomorrow to clean!

I took a bunch of before pictures today that won't be as powerful without the after pictures to compare them to, but you'll have to wait to be amazed since we don't have after photos just yet. If you want to check them out, however, head to my Flickr set, "The House! (Before)."
